What makes me tick? Reflections on 2012

I have learnt so much about myself by starting a business:  I am motivated by having interesting things to do, and meeting new people. I love observing the family dynamic at work and trying to help families through what is almost always a challenging time, not least as sibling rivalries are re-ignited. My business needs to make money, but that isn’t my main driver.  I have a low boredom threshold and like to have a new challenge. I now wonder how I survived all those years in the same job, sitting through so many meetings as a note taker.

The next year has lots of challenges – I take on an apprentice in January, I move into my new office in August.  All this must be paid for.  Sometimes I still feel like a total amateur playing at running a business, but occasionally I get a glimmer of belief that I know what I’m doing and that the successes I am having can continue.  The challenges and obstacles are round every corner, but actually I quite enjoy tackling them, so for the time being I keep going.
